pain I. substantiv

1. durere (mai ales fizică); suferinţă;

to give smb. pain a pricinui cuiva durere, a face să-l doară; a-l durea; a face pe cineva să sufere, a îndurera pe cineva;

to have a pain in the head a-l durea capul;

shooting pain junghi;

to be in pain a suferi, a fi îndurerat;

to be out of pain a scăpa de suferinţă, a nu mai suferi;

to cry out with pain a striga de durere, a ţipa de durere;

(fam.) to give smb. a pain in the neck a enerva pe cineva, a bate pe cineva la cap;

(fam.) a pain in the neck un om plictisitor / enervant, un om care te calcă pe nervi.

2. plural osteneală, trudă, strădanie;

to take great pains, to be at great pains to, to go to / to be at the pains of a-şi da osteneala să, a se trudi să, a se strădui să, a face tot posibilul să;

to have one's labour for one's pains, to have one's pains for nothing, to have nothing for one’s pains a se trudi (pe) degeaba; a se trudi în zadar;

to be a tool for one's pains a se trudi în zadar / fără nici un rezultat.

3. plural durerile facerii.

4. (înv.) pedeapsă;

(azi numai în expresiile) on / upon pain of (death etc.) sub pedeapsa cu (moartea etc.)

pain II. verb tranzitiv

a face (pe cineva) să sufere; a-l durea (dinţii etc.); a mâhni, a îndurera;

my arm pains me mă doare braţul;

it pains me to learn that mă mâhneşte să aflu că.
